2017 Memories and Milestones
Most people experience ups and downs each year and mine certainly hasn’t been any different. After the highs of my 2016 (I expect most people would count the year they got married and went on honeymoon as one of the best of their life), I want to look back on 2017 with positivity even though it was probably always going to be a hard one to match.
To give me a hand in looking back on my year, I jumped on the Instagram 'best 9' bandwagon and my most liked posts couldn’t have summed the highs of 2017 up better:
1. Of course my big piece of personal news is I am going to be a mama, wha. Still can’t quite get over it. Overwhelming and scary of course, but as soon as I found out, I’ve felt protective of myself and what’s growing in there. I can only imagine what it will feel like when the bubba is here. I’ve definitely found the change in my energy levels and body quite a challenge to get used to and want to continue blogging about how that’s affected my attitude to fitness, as I have done here.
2. I completed a triathlon! Yey! If you’re a regular reader you will know how I felt about learning to swim so I’m not going to go on about that for the millionth time, but this was a big personal achievement to learn front crawl and compete in open water. It was never about the time for me but I did come in quicker than I thought I would (especially in the swim), enjoyed training in the Serpentine (proper London experience that one) and managed quite a few cycle commute to works in the summer, which was enjoyable when I wasn’t dicing with death.
3. I completed two half marathons! One of which I got a PB, which wasn’t what I was aiming for by a PB is a PB! It was also my first race abroad which was an exciting experience, except for the exceptional hangover the next day which lasted right through the Easyjet flight home…that’s definitely part of the trip I could have done without!
4. The other half marathon was a totally different experience for me. After having gone through a few difficult weeks, I decided to take it easy on myself and I ran my slowest race yet. However, I ran with a friend on her debut and I hope (she’s probably too polite to tell me otherwise!) that I helped get her through it. I remember my first race and the unknown is a scary thing.
5. Ahem, I met Craig David.
I also looked back on last year’s post of things I wanted to achieve next year and I pretty much ticked them all off, also getting a PB in the 10km winter run and allllmost completing Kayla’s programme. In fact the only one I didn’t really meet was putting more time into my blog, partly due to extreme busy periods at work and because I’ve been pregnant for nearly half of the year which has had an impact on my exercise routine and therefore my blog content.
I want to think a bit more before I set myself some targets for next year so I’ll be coming back to Part 2 in a week!
Wishing you the very best new year and thanks to anyone who is reading this, following my journey and giving me support over on the old Insta. If I had to pick a couple of things to take with me into 2018 it’s that there are always, always going to be people who try and tear you down, which says far more about them than you. I’ve also really thought about how each of us are responsible for our own happiness – self care, exercise, switching off, time alone, time with others, even monitoring my own internal thoughts have all been my saviours.
